Syed Shariful Hasan Naqvi was born in Sandila, a small town, an hour’s drive today from Lucknow, the state capital of UP, in the heartland of Northern India.

The value he placed upon education is reflected in his three Masters of Arts degrees, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Sciences from the University of Leeds, UK.

As an educationist and administrator, it was his ability to put the interests of others ahead of his own, which endeared him to so many people.

Throughout his working career and even in his retirement, one aspect of his personality that stood out was his willingness to help others, and especially to go out of his way to help someone in need.

Traditional in many aspects of his life, he was fiercely modern about education – well ahead of his time. He put great emphasis on the education of children, especially of the girl child. He did an incredible amount of work in the sphere of adult education, giving his time freely.

It is in his memory that this scholarship and bursary is instituted.
